Privacy policy
We collect as little as we can to run an anonymous chat service safely.
Last updated October 2026
What we collect
- Your profile: a random name and emoji, your confirmation that you are 18 or older, the gender you choose, and optionally the languages you chat in, your interests, country, state and city. Your country is filled in automatically from your network (we look it up from your connection and keep only the country code, not your IP address) and you can change or clear it in your profile.
- If you buy Premium: the amount, date and Cashfree order and payment IDs. Cashfree processes the payment; we never see your card, UPI or bank details.
- If you save your account: your email address, or your Google account ID and email.
- Safety data: a random device ID stored in a cookie, and a keyed hash of the IP address you signed up from. We never store your raw IP address.
- Friend chats: messages, GIFs, voice notes and photos you send to friends are stored so you can read them later.
- Flagged messages: if a message in a stranger chat looks like a phone number, email, link or a scam or solicitation, it is still delivered, but a short excerpt is kept for our moderators, who may act on repeated cases.
- Reports: when someone is reported, the last few messages of that chat are stored for our moderators.
What we don't collect
- Chats with strangers are never saved, unless the chat is reported.
- Stranger voice notes and photos are passed through in memory and never stored.
- We don't collect your phone number, contacts or precise location.
- We don't sell your data.
How we use it
To match you with other people, deliver messages, keep the service safe (moderation, bans, preventing abuse), let you log back in, and send friend notifications if you turn them on.
Service providers
We host on Amazon Web Services in India (Mumbai), behind Cloudflare, which delivers the site worldwide and passes us your country. Login codes are emailed through Google's Gmail service, and photos are checked for harmful content with Amazon Rekognition. GIF search is provided by GIPHY. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your account ID and email with us.
How long we keep it
- Friend chats: until either of you removes the other, which deletes the chat for both of you.
- Reports and moderation records: as long as needed to keep the service safe.
- Login codes: deleted within a day.
Your choices
You can edit your profile, remove friends, turn notifications off, and log out of all devices at any time. You can delete your account and data on our delete account page. To get a copy of your data, or for any privacy question, email [email protected].
People outside India (GDPR, UK GDPR and similar laws)
StrangerYaar is run from India, so if you use it from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or anywhere else, your information is sent to and stored in India. We rely on your agreement to our terms to provide the service, our legitimate interest in keeping an anonymous chat safe (moderation, bans, abuse prevention), our legal obligations, and, for advertising cookies, your consent. Where the law gives you these rights, you can ask us to give you access to your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, move it, or withdraw consent at any time, and you can complain to your local data protection authority. Email us at [email protected]; we answer within 30 days.
California and other US states
We don't sell your personal information for money. Advertising cookies on the pages with ads may count as "sharing" or targeted advertising under some US state laws. You can opt out by choosing "Decline" in our cookie banner (shown to visitors in the EU, UK and Switzerland, and available from the footer on every page) or by turning off personalised ads in Google Ads Settings. You can also ask us to access, delete or correct your information at the email above, and we won't treat you worse for doing so.
India (DPDP Act)
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you can ask for a summary of your data, correction, erasure, and grievance redressal. Our grievance officer is reachable at [email protected].
Children
StrangerYaar is for adults only (18+). If you think someone under 18 is using it, report them in the app or email us and we will remove the account.
Advertising
Some information pages (the state and city pages, the blog, the FAQ and the safety guide) show ads from Google AdSense, and the app shows one ad on the screen you see while we find you a match. The home page, your chat settings and the chats themselves never show ads. On pages with ads, Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads, limit how often you see them and measure them, including ads based on your visits to other websites. We never pass Google your chats, profile or anything you type. You can turn off personalised ads in Google Ads Settings and read how Google uses this data on its partner-sites page.
Cookies
Our own cookies are only the ones needed to run the service: one to keep you logged in, one device ID for safety, and small preferences such as your language and your cookie choice. Our visit counter (Umami) does not use cookies. Google's advertising cookies apply only on the pages with ads, as described above. In the EU, the UK and Switzerland (and whenever we can't tell where you are), we ask for your agreement before loading ads; until you accept, no ads or advertising cookies load. You can change your choice any time with "Cookie settings" in the footer.
