On Android, install StrangerYaar from Google Play. It's small, opens full screen and lets you know when a friend writes back.

On iPhone or a computer, open strangeryaar.com in your browser. You can add it to your home screen and it opens like an app. Your chats and friends are the same everywhere once you save an account.

What you can do in the app

• Matching by language (33 to choose from) and interests

Why text instead of video

Most random chat apps are built around a camera. That's exactly why many people don't use them: you don't know who's on the other side, and you can't take back what they've seen.

With text, you decide how much of yourself to share. Conversations also tend to go deeper, because you're talking rather than judging faces in two seconds.

Light on your phone

There's no video, so the app uses very little data and runs well on a modest phone or a slow connection. It's a good fit for chatting on mobile data, late at night, or on an older Android phone.

Safe by design

The app is for adults only: everyone confirms they are 18 or older. Strangers see only a random name, an avatar and your city or country if you pick one. Stranger chats aren't stored unless someone reports one, and moderators review every report.
